Two main pathways to decarbonize cement sector are Clinker Decarbonisation and Clinker Substitution.    Substituting alternative waste fuel for fossil fuel and substituting Calcined Clay for clinker are both environmental and business opportunities for cement producers.  They represent significant and readily available ways to advance towards industry’s decarbonization goals.   The use of alternative fuels should not come at additional complexity and cost, but rather provide new efficiencies, minimize downtime, and reduce costs. FLSmidth Cement’s HOTDISC® Reactor, enables up to 80% calciner fuel substitution with coarse alternative fuels. A newly developed FUELFLEX® Pyrolyzer uses preheated raw materials and alternative fuels to achieve nearly 100% energy efficiency. The ability to retrofit both solutions cost-effectively into existing plants further enhances their appeal.   A way to decarbonisation via Clinker Substitution depends heavily on Calcined Clay as the most attractive clinker substitute.This presentation will explore various points from intricacies of drivers for use of Calcined Clay as Supplementary Cementitious Material, importance of clay performance evaluation, challenges in the variability of clays to quality of final product. The presentation will leverage FLSmidth Cement’s years of experience and innovation in this area resulting in FLSmidth Cement’s Gas Suspension Calciner technology with integrated colour control unit.   Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of how to navigate to alternative fuels and how to implement Clay Calcination into their production as well as and the critical role technology plays in moving cement industry from “Grey to Green”.
